The Do-Not-Fly Book List
« on: October 07, 2011, 03:07 PM »
OK, there are so many threads which are all about people's FAV things, but I want to dish some dirt and have a little rant fest.

So I thought, why not start a Do-Not-Fly list for books? Books that we, as readers, cannot tolerate to any degree at all. Ones we couldn't finish, couldn't help but finish because they were just that bad and ones which we feel the need to completely warn others off from.

What have you read that you feel needs to make this list?

You can rank them using this rating scheme if you want:

-1 star               :(                   I just didn't like it.
-2 stars             :o                   How did this go so wrong?
-3 stars             :'(                  (choked sob) It was horrible...
-4 stars             :-X                 Words cannot explain how bad this book was.
-5 stars             >:(                 I want to murder this book. It has pushed me to brink of insanity.

Which novels will make the list of STP's Most Hated? What book will be crowned STP's #1 Despised Book?
Stay tuned to find out...  :D

I stopped reading JR Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood just because of all the inconsistencies but I know it's still a very loved series to a lot of people.

It was also difficult for me to get accustomed to the style of writing of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, it is somewhat dry and the dialogues in the first book are horrible and primitive, but it gets better in other installments, and the plot and characters improve.

I agree but I think for me what was too much is how she has extended the Quinn and Blay relationship problems.

Entangled by Cat Clarke deserves so much more than just a BIG FAT -5.

I can't tell you how much i detest this book.  I felt violated after reading it....i wanted back all the time i had wasted reading it back.  The mc is a complete mess and her so called friend and bf is worst.  The story is told through a diary of days type.....Don't waste your time on this Horrible book.

Although i didnt hate this book as bad as you did the ending really did NOT ALLOWED me off and if i had a best friend and boy friend like that i would punch them in the face  >:( what jerks!!

Erm, I know some probably liked this book... But I just can't seem to finish this or start it at all!
Blood Red Road by Moira Young, I give it a -1
I can't give it any higher than that because I seriously haven't finish it yet. I'm like in page 41 and I cannot seem to go on because I disliked the character already. Jeebus, I could shout Incest any minute just from her thoughts. And the way the character thinks of her own sister. I'm just pure disgust on the protagonists' personality right now.
I might come around to finishing it, because I rarely give up on a book. But I do not know if I'll end up liking it even when I do.

Flesh Eaters by Joe Mckinney gets a 'how did this go so wrong?' -2 from me

Purely because one of the POV characters spends about three quarters of the book wailing about his duty and his honor and blah blah blah zombiecakes, while PLANNING A BANK HEIST. The whole books is just one big OH HELL NO to me. My brain is refusing to read anything else today - it has been defiled and needs to be cleansed.

Oh. I just only saw this thread today. Great Idea Poprad!!

I was in the mood for some Post Apocalypse book today so read:
Famished by Lauren Hammond  (And had some high hopes for it)
-2 stars   :o

The summary sounds promising, as is the beginning of the book, but... A lot of things just don't click.
It's frustrating how the author leaves out essential info. A commit hits earth and suddenly 14 families in one city bands together and lives underground. She doesn't explain how the underground facility was built, how long it took, where they get water from, how vegetables are able to grow underground without sunlight, how they are able to breathe (Ventilation?), etc. It is as if everything just existed in a a few hours after the disaster. And there is no contact with other towns, states. How is that possible? Surely some governments are prepared for such incidents??
The female lead is bitchy and not admirable in the least. All the characters are flat. They have no characteristics. They're just uninteresting words on paper.

With a better writing style, more detail to characters, less confusing situations and more research into 'the how and the why' it might have been a better book.

This had so much potential *shakes head ruefully*

I agree with you. I started it (might not have gotten as far as you) but just couldn't read further.
Because so many people on goodreads had positive reviews on it, I tried again. But first impressions stick. I won't waist my time on a book that so many others like when I just 'don't get it'. There are too many other "better" books to read.
Opinions differ  and mostly that's a good thing.

The Substitue Bride - Margaret Pargeter -5 stars  >:(

This book has a plain jane and thats what enticed me to read it....It was horrible. As the name of the book suggests, the h is substituting for her cousin...

"'Well, no one,' he taunted, 'needs rose-coloured
spectacles in bed.'
His careless frankness was making her quiver and
bringing wild colour to her pale cheeks."
This is just a sample of how the rest of the book will be.

In all the plain janes that i have read never have i come across such a jerk off. The stupidity of the h was also very frustrating. I wanted to slap both of them so hard and "bring wild color to their cheeks". And he didnt quit being a jerk till the last 10 pages when suddenly he realises that he loves his wife while the rest of the 230 pages he abused her both verbally and physically.

I dont know what made them love each other.Maybe it was when the H (finally) realised that his wife was a virgin and not the slut that everyone ( his own family ) making her to be. This book takes the whole mean hero thing a step too far. This is one sick book. Dont read it.

Love Unscripted -4 stars

Pasintabi (which means no offense in my dialect) to those who love this book.

I don't know if anyone would agree, but this book took a knife to my brain, and twisted it 360!
I thought the heroine was great as first, head-on strong, non-doormat, and definitely admirable! Then she meets the hero, which i wish i could swoon for, because God help me, he was hot... at first!

Till they fell in love and a swarm-ful of "honey, i love you" and "no, honey, i love you more" and whatever other "honey"s they can think of. Love became so overrated that if love was like this in real life, i'd be a hermit by now! Seriously, the plot gets dragged on and on and on! I kept reading on hoping for the miracle that never came, and decided to abandon the book more or less midway. Just read from the revs that heroine got pregnant with a stalker someone after them and whatever else the author felt like adding to make her book thicker. Well, she did, and it killed the story. Then i found out there was sequel to this book. So i pulled my hypothetical hand gun, cranked in and pulled the trigger to my head. I broke up with the book without an ounce of remorse. Just the pang of sadness that i wasted a couple of hours on the book that was never meant to be.

The Vampire Journals by Morgan Rice -4 stars
It's called the Vampire Journals and she doesn't really write in the journal that much just mentions it here and there. They make no sense. The peoples ages change each book along with the back story of everyone. The only thing consistent in these books is that Caitlin is trying to find her dad. And three people have the name Sam.

For me the worst thing is reading a series that ends all wrong
Andrea Cremer's Nightshade series was a disappointment (-4 just because I liked the first book)
Jenny Han's Summer series (-5) How could it end with the H picking the guy who treated her like dirt her whole life?
Amy Bartol's Intution series (-5) Did not even finish the 2nd book Inescapable

Single books
Scott Prussing's Breathless (-2) I found it boring
Laura Moriarty's While Im Falling (-4) Did finish however I feel I wasted time

Your life is a story, what's done is done. Where it goes from here is totally up to you.  Write your own ending!!!  :)
