Are you a cover snob?
« on: October 08, 2011, 01:55 PM »
After a few discussions about book covers I decided to start a thread dealing with book covers and whether or not you 'judge a book by it's cover' hehehe ;)

Do you base your ebook purchases on whether or not the cover is appealing to you? What are your favorite and least favorite book covers? Feel free to post links of photo's of book covers you love or hate.

Happy Birthday, Grey!! I hereby declare you the official, unchallenged master of everything that is, ever was, and ever will be... At least for today :)

Totally a cover snob, the cover brings me in, I will of course read the description won't buy unless I am actually interested in the story, but the cover starts it for me.  Now for my ereader, I can't allow myself to not have a cover, and it has to be perfect, I can spot a cover change too, I saw that Nicole Jordan has released some books with new covers, I always take a breath and then have to decide if I really need to buy a book that I already have in paperback and ebook just because of a new cover.
Keep on reading!  Please remember to click the THANK YOU button!

I AM A COVER SNOB
If the cover's interesting ..i start reading the book at once...nd i dont stop until it's finished. I think the better the cover...more amazing is the story and the imagination developed while reading it. I can actually imagine the scenario ...... <3

Not if it's the next in a series that I must have or if I've read about what it's about and it not seen cover or really intrigued me. But otherwise I'd have to say yeah I am a bit. I mean there is soooo much wonderful art out there that shows so much or artists who are soo amazing and willing for work and yet there are still these lame ass covers or publishers using really crappy illustrators just coz they are an old standby. It's no excuse! They should definately put more thought into the covers- I mean it does stand as a representation ot the authors work, their written art.
A visual representation rely's on capturing your eye to show you some thing, express something, a feeling or idea of the book, it's important. There's no denying looks count for something, it is although unfortunately shallow but apart of being human. We need to be attracted before we can find out more about something. The covers are what draw us to the book- they need to be good and also accurate in representing something of the story- the most intriguing part of it.

I wouldn't say that I am a cover snob, but sometimes an interesting cover goes a long way to create interest in the book.  Most of the time, I read the description and a little of the book to see if I can get into the before buying it.

wow this feels like AA meeting for cover snobbery....so here goes....
hello, my name is SuperWen11 and I'm cover snob :P
okay, to be completely honest with you guys, when I see a good cover and I like the synopsis I definitely buy the book, but if the synopsis is not as good as the cover (it happens) I just download the cover...what can I say, apart from being a book junkie I'm also cover junkie..and for me it doesn't matter if there's juicy photo on the cover (tho, boy do I ever love those) or something funny and sweet or whatever, as long as it's easy on the eyes... ;)
I can't say I missed lots of good books if I judged them by cover, maybe I missed them because I didn't like synopsis, I know it sounds weird but there's loads of books where synopsis sounds super boring and then once you read them all you can think is "wow, now this is a good book", and vice versa, of course :) ...and, yep, I do read books I think maybe I won't like, mostly I read them because they've been recommended by friends, and hey, when's drought of good books, beggars can't be choosers :)
I loooveeee reading...just give me books and I'm HAPPY! :)

I won't NOT read a book because of its cover, but I have definitely read a ton of books based only on their cover.

I am a cover snob. I will read the excerpt of the book. But if it does not catch my attention. I will either put the book back or read it last.

Yes I am a cover snob. Furthermore, I notice and hate that most of the IR ebooks use some of the same models time and time again. Whats the deal with that? ??? ??? ??? ???

Since ebooks came out, I don't really care about covers anymore. I'm more interested in book covers only for artistic reasons - layout, font, colors and of course the artists who make the covers up. It's also fun to look up models who are portrayed on the covers. The synopsis is also important in choosing a story to read. I'm also particular in reading stories by series.

Guilty!! Lol I remember passing up Kate Daniels Series by Iliona Andrews just due to disliking the covers. I saw the high ratings on Goodreads and one day I decided to just go ahead and read it- I love the series! Same thing happen with the Fever series by Karie Moning (?) sorry dont remember if thats right.

Usually, I use Goodreads.com to look for books to read if the cover is appealing and the rating is 3.8 or above I read the synopsis and decide from there.

My favorite covers include the Hush Hush, Fallen series, and Chicagoland Vampires. Just to name a few.

I almost didn't read the Vampire Academy series because one of the covers is a blatant ripoff of a Buffy the Vampire Slayer promo photo.  I'm glad I changed my mind though!

I honestly say that I'm a sucker for books with lovely cover, it's the first thing that catches my attention and if I see that the cover is awesome, I immediately read its synopsis and finally decide if I do want to read and buy the book. Some of the most beautiful covers I love are -

Iron Fey series
Fallen (by Lauren Kate)
Warm Delicacy (by Megan Duncan)
Unearthly (by Cynthia Hand)
Sirensong (Faeriewalker 3)

...and the one I like the least is 'Heart on a Chain' by Cindy Bennett though it was a really good book   :)

Guilty! I am a cover snob! lol
Even though I try not to, but I can't help it!
When in bookstores, beautiful covers really catches your attention and makes you wanna buy them (no matter how much it is. xD) and cool fonts are also easy to notice when looking at stacks.
But you gotta admit, reading a book with a beautiful cover in public makes you feel good. xD
Saying thank you is more than good manners.  It is good spirituality.

Even though covers are deceiving, they're still important because it's fairly hard to get rid of first impressions and the first impression you get of a book is from its cover  ;)
