Are you a cover snob?
« on: October 08, 2011, 01:55 PM »
After a few discussions about book covers I decided to start a thread dealing with book covers and whether or not you 'judge a book by it's cover' hehehe ;)

Do you base your ebook purchases on whether or not the cover is appealing to you? What are your favorite and least favorite book covers? Feel free to post links of photo's of book covers you love or hate.

Happy Birthday, Grey!! I hereby declare you the official, unchallenged master of everything that is, ever was, and ever will be... At least for today :)

I must say that I am, in fact, a total cover snob and have bought many books that pretty much sucked based on the fact that the cover drew me in, and I have probably missed out on just as many great books because I hated the covers. *bows head in shame*

Eeeh, my answer is a resounding YES! So shallow, I know. In my defense I don't always fall for the cover. :P
As for favorite and least favorite covers, uh, I have to shuffle through and actually look through the favorite ones, as for the opposite, I can't say I know, I don't really pay attention to those. :S

Eh, chin up! Keep in mind, we are visual creatures, it's nothing to be ashamed of! :)

When it comes to authors I know and love/hate I go by experience. Otherwise I have definitely picked up books solely on their cover, but I don't judge just on that, I also read the blurb.
But an ugly cover on a book I haven't heard of before? I don't even notice it most of the time.

i am guilty of a book cover catching my eye but once i get past the cover i read the description of the book to see if its worth it or not.. i cant really say that ive bought a book just for its cover without even knowing what its about.

Yes, I am  ;D

The whole reason I bought this book http://www.amazon.com/Perfect-Play-Play---Play-Novel/dp/0425238814/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1318127722&sr=8-2
Was for the cover  ;D  I didn't even stop to read the synopsis first, lol.

Absolutely!!!

After all it's the cover that first catches your eye. Unless it's an author I know and love (in which case it doesn't matter what the cover looks like) I first go by the cover. I must say I'm more apt to NOT read a book based on the cover though. Some books you look at them and wonder what the heck they were thinking!!

Of course after seeing the book I've got to read a little to make up my mind. :) I can't just go by the cover only.

Some covers I think are really beautiful:

Shattered Souls by Mary Lindsey
Fallen, Torment, Passion by Lauren Kate

Yes, I am. Usually read the blurbs too but a nice cover does entice. And similarly, a not so nice cover puts me off sometimes. Remember the cover for "Beautiful Disaster", did not even read the blurb until I read a no. of good reviews for the book and then read both the blurb and the book inspite of the cover :).
Happy Reading !!!

This is to funny. I just realized I'm a complete cover snob hehe. A few of my reading buddies keep telling me to read Christine Feehan's novels but I just can't bring myself to do it cause the covers are so cheesy.

Actually most covers are getting much better these days, if you look at some of the covers from like 2005, for example I went back and reread the a couple of series' and the first covers are horrible, especially compared to reprints and the later books.

I actually prefer some of the older covers vs those of the reprints- one example would be L.J. Smith's Night World series. (Check the links below for pics of each) Maybe that's just me though ;)

Night World 1: Secret Vampire original cover:http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1218045708l/395873.jpg

Secret Vampire updated cover: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__tKXK20LFdU/TMjlldSyglI/AAAAAAAABZY/lpBX-lIBayY/s1600/Secret+Vampire.jpg

I mean sure, in the original covers they all had super bad 80's/90's hair but the covers were scarier, more indepth whereas nowadays its all about the appeal of physical appearances....no offense to anyone but our generation is all about '$ex appeal' over quality and imagination....

So many of the books today just have those stupid head shots. No imagination or creativity.

Oh, and don't even get me started on the multiple covers for a book. Why is that? Maybe if they didn't have 2 or 3 cover designs for one book it could keep costs down a bit. Just thinking...

I just added her to my list of books NOT to read in the other thread, lol.  The one I tried to listen to on audio WAS cheesy, lol.  She has a HUGE following, but I can't bring myself to even try again, the one I listened to was so bad.
